What to Expect

Our Sunday morning gathering begins at 10:15 a.m. in person at 432 Wood Ave. or on our Facebook page (we stream the service live and post a recording that can be viewed at any time following the worship hour).

Sumner First Christian Church is a covenantal member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). This link provides more information about our identity and basic beliefs: https://disciples.org/our-identity/

We are a Christian community that is open to seekers and to an intelligent exploration of the Word in the world (We believe in the Inspired Word of God and the power of Christ to bind all people together at the table where weekly we celebrate Communion). We prize ecumenical and interfaith relationships and engagement as we seek to understand others and live peaceably in the world.

When you come to worship, you can expect:

  • A small gathering of friendly seekers who will welcome you and honor your need for space to visit and see what the church is like.
  • If you join us online, you will also find a warm welcome and an invitation to gather a few things together to participate along with those gathered in person.
  • During our time together, there will be a responsive reading to call us together, singing of 3-4 songs or hymns, Scripture reading and a sermon/message for the day, prayers of the people (when we pray for ourselves and others) and the Lord’s prayer (using “debts” and “debtors”), and Communion (our table is open to all). Currently we come forward to take Communion (a gluten free option is available). Children are welcome at the table at the discretion of parents or supervising adults. (We serve grape juice).
  • Children are a part of the faith community and are welcome in worship. We have worship packets available outside of the Sanctuary along with various books. Please feel free to move about and do what you need to to help your child be comfortable in worship.
  • Fellowship time following church where you can share coffee, snacks, and conversation with others.

We continue to be aware of Covid and the risk it poses. Masks are not required, but are available. If you are symptomatically ill, have been exposed to Covid, and are awaiting a negative test result, or have Covid, please stay home and follow CDC guidelines for quarantining before returning. We thank you for your patience and understanding.
