What does it mean to be a person of faith? After relaying the Parable of the Good Samaritan, Jesus asks the lawyer which of the three was a neighbor to the man lying in the road. Which one was really a neighbor when that man needed a neighbor? The lawyer responded: “The one who showed mercy.”

We are living tense times, when troubles that have festered for years in the shadows have burst into the open. And yet we are called, in the midst of our heated and sometimes entrenched and very different views, to focus on God and walk in his ways, with compassion for all people.
