On this Easter Sunday, we hear the resurrection story from John’s Gospel and remember the bravery of Mary who, consumed with grief, went to the tomb early in the morning. While many negate the importance and place of women’s leadership in church, through John’s Gospel, we remember that Mary was the first to hear the voice of the risen Christ and to tell others of his resurrection. Through her, we are reminded of how Christ shows up at the empty tombs of our lives, speaks our names and revives our hope for new life and new beginnings.
