Today we hear the story of Jesus simultaneously teaching his disciples and the crowd gathered at the foot of the mountain. The Sermon on the Mount, or the Beatitudes, from Matthew’s Gospel cause us to reevaluate our definition of blessedness. To be blessed, or favored by God, happens in the moments we would define as undesirable, difficult, hard. In this way, blessedness is about experiencing a closeness of God in the moments of hunger, emptiness and powerlessness.
