We have been dubbed “the throw away society.” We are quick to want to replace rather than repair things as we understand most things in our lives to be disposable. What happens when we treat people as though they are disposable? Jesus’ parables of the lost sheep and the lost coin provide critics of Jesus with context to consider that “sinners and tax collectors” are not disposable; but rather, are welcomed guests at our table. When we dine together and spend time together we see each other’s humanity…we begin to see God’s image in the one we label “other” or the one we have not traditionally assigned much value or worth to.
