Listen

There is a well-documented phenomena in which people who are in their last days of life will have dreams in which they speak with loved ones who are long deceased or go on a journey with friends. Those studying this don’t yet understand what sparks the dreams, but it is clear they comfort the dying.

In today’s scripture reading Peter, James and John have a dream-like vision in which they see Jesus’ appearance change and become dazzling white, and they see Moses and Elijah.

Peter is quick to chime in with words and his own understanding, saying to Jesus: “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three dwellings, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”

But a cloud takes him up (presumably the presence of God) and says to him, “This is my son, my chosen, listen to him.” The presence of God instructs Peter that in the experience of divine mystery, do not be quick to speak, but rather listen.”

We see mysterious, sacred, divine things happen that are outside the realm of human understanding. Especially as we prepare to enter into the season of Lent, we need to remind ourselves (as the Lord reminded Peter) to slow down and listen.

Today’s message is based on Luke 9: 28-36
