On this Second Sunday of Lent we turn to the story of Nicodemus and his encounter with Jesus in the veil of the night. We often read this story from the dual lens of “Nicodemus is this…and Jesus is that” and assume that part of Nicodemus’ struggle is making a choice for either/or. We learn that the story has far more complexity than that and that God does not expect us to choose between our “old” selves and our “new” selves, but instead invites us to bring every part of who we are on the journey of change, transition and growth in the Spirit.
