A Vision of Change

Posted on 23 Feb 2020, Pastor: Rochelle Richards

Six days after Peter confessed Jesus’ true identity and reacted poorly to the news of Jesus’ impending death and resurrection, Jesus took Peter, James and John up to a high mountain top. We use this metaphor to talk about spiritual experiences that elevate us–it was a mountaintop experience. On the mountaintop, Jesus’ appearance is changed and Peter, James and John witness a mystical vision of a radiant Jesus with Moses and Elijah. The Greek work for transfiguration (metamorphoomai) is also the word Paul uses to speak of the transformation of one’s heart. So this story of a mystical vision at the end of Epiphany and at the doorstep of Lent, is meant to draw us into the change of heart God desires.

Today’s message is based on Matthew 17: 1-9
