Jesus’ first post-resurrection to his disciples in John’s Gospel, has him addressing their fear with peace. Peace is the first gift Jesus gives and that, along with the Holy Spirit, empowers followers of Christ to the work of forgiveness. Thomas, who was not with the disciples at Jesus’ first appearance, serves as an example of doubt and skepticism. Jesus speaks and embodies peace to Thomas and his doubts and we must do the same, lest our the witness of our faith be mere empty words and platitudes.
