The need in the world is overwhelming, even for Jesus. In today’s story Jesus calls his disciples to be and do something different–to move from being simply disciples (followers) to being (Apostles–leaders/doers of the work). Followers of Christ are first, and primarily disciples–who listen, learn and observe from Christ. By coming back to this role, we are continually rooting ourselves in Jesus and particularly the deep compassion he had for people that led to the calling of Apostles in the first place.
