It wouldn’t take much for anyone to guess why this past Sunday was an exciting one for residents of Washington State. To say that everyone was happy about the Seahawk’s Super Bowl victory is probably an understatement.

But what made this Sunday extra exciting for me was the fact that our  youth led the church in collecting food items for the Sumner Food Bank as a part of the Souper Bowl of Caring. Youth groups across the nation participate in this event every year to help ease hunger within their communities. This was our fourth year to collect food for the Sumner Food Bank.

We collected 218 food items for the food bank. Thank you to everyone who donated and helped to make this year’s collection one of our biggest. What always amazes me is how much good we can do when when we are unified in spirit and purpose and contribute even just a little out of our abundance. The gifts given will help individuals and families facing food shortages this month…some of it will be sent home in backpacks with children and youth  in our school district to help them have food over the weekends…all of it will make a difference in someone’s life.

I am amazed by the unified spirit of the 12th man…and my prayer is that we can all take that spirit and remember that when we work together and care for one another, we can make a noticeable difference.

The youth of Sumner First Christian Church helped collect 218 food items for the Sumner Food Bank
